What is OBD

As cars have become more digital, they are capable of storing so much data about every single component of the vehicle. From a simple manufacturing date to sensor readings that monitor the health state of every part (ECU), to vehicle histories such as previous error codes, and the possibility to configure systems such as the ABS.

All of this data is stored in a car’s OBD, which stands for on-board diagnostics. It is a system that monitors the performance of a vehicle and provides self-diagnosis information.

Nevertheless, the access to the OBD of our cars is not given to us, the car owners. However, with a dedicated OBD tool, we can easily access all of this hidden data and unlock extremely valuable information about our cars.

Having access to your car’s data helps you know if there are issues in your car, what are the issues, how to fix them, and in some cases, you can even control back a component through car coding!

3 Types Of OBD Scanners

There are 3 main tools that can help you access a car’s OBD system. These tools provide similar features such as car diagnostics, live parameters, and car coding. However, they are meant for different users, such as professional mechanics or car beginners.

OBD Computer Software

This solution is mostly meant for car experts and professionals that have a lot of knowledge and experience with car data. The OBD computer software displays raw data about your vehicle in the form of graphs, charts, and tables with hundreds of numbers. There is not much analysis provided by the software.

Additionally, the equipment consists of the software, a computer, and OBD cables that connect the computer to the vehicle. So its not a portable setup, and you mostly find mechanic shops using this solution.

OBD handheld devices

Handheld devices are mostly used by car mechanics or car owners that have the knowledge to interpret car data. They are more friendly than computer softwares, but they still provide a lot of raw data that needs to be analyzed.

Moreover, these devices range in size, from small phone sizes to large tablets. So they are more portable, but can still be bulky and requires OBD cables as well.

OBD scanner

OBD scanners are meant for everyone, from car beginners to experts. They are a small pocket-sized device that you can plug into your car and via Bluetooth, you can access your car’s data through your phone, on a OBD mobile app. So, they are not bulky, are extremely portable, and do not require additional equipment.

A big advantage is that OBD apps provide a lot of analysis and information about the raw data. So, you don’t have to worry about searching elsewhere for explanations and content, since it’s all given to you.

How to pick the best OBD scanner?

The most convenient, portable, and easy-to-use tool are OBD2 scanners. You can leave them plugged into your car’s OBD port, so all you need besides that is your phone.

There are many OBD2 scanners to choose from, however, the best one will be the one that offers you the highest value and features for its price

Here is a short checklist for picking the best OBD2 scanner:

I brought this for my Peugeot 407 as I was getting an intermittent fault on it. I have to say this is a brilliant tool and it can do so much for such a small price. It was nice and easy to set up on my computer with the easy to follow instructions supplied in the box. The product is very well made and looks like it would work well for quite some time. I would recommend this product to any one who knows a bit about cars and wants to fix there car them selves. – from Customer | March 21, 2022
